Who is the principal of Hazelwood?

Dr. Tim Parnell is the principal of Hazelwood.  He was born (1956) in Springfield, Oregon; the youngest of five children.  His dad was a high school coach, principal, and later the Oregon State Superintendent of Public Instruction and a college president.  His mother held her MDA (Master of Domestic Affairs). All four of his siblings worked and/or still work in public education. Dr. Parnell  attended college in California and settled in the wonderful Puget Sound area over 30 years ago. He earned his Master’s Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seattle Pacific University.  He has served in the field of education since 1979. He taught and coached at the elementary and middle school levels. He has been principal at Hazelwood since 2001.
Dr. Parnell and his wife, Julie, were married in 1977.  She is a physical therapist. They have three grown sons, who are married, and they have six grandchildren. Two of their sons are college football coaches in Minnesota and Florida. Their eldest son is a business owner and lives in the Gig Harbor/Tacoma area.  Besides visiting his family; Dr. Parnell and his wife enjoy bicycling, swimming, walking and hiking together. They love the outdoors, snow skiing, and the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  They enjoy all kinds of sports, eating out, reading, spending time with friends and family, and movies! They are also involved in their church and Young Life. Faith is an important part of their lives as this  renews and grounds who they are and how they try to live. Dr. Parnell has found that a Love and Logic© approach to parenting and teaching is extremely healthy and helpful.  Love and Logic© has been a rich resource. It really helped him focus on preparing his sons for the real world. Love and Logic© helped Dr. Parnell and his wife  maintain healthy and growing lifelong relationships with his family. Recently, someone asked Dr. Parnell why he wanted to be an elementary school principal.  It was a good question. He responded with a few reasons:
I am energized by kids!  I continually learn from them and I hope they learn from me

I love encouraging students to develop a strong foundation for their lives.   I love teaching and learning. That’s what school is supposed to be about.

Then, he was asked, whether or not he liked being a principal, he said,

"Absolutely, I’ve never had a boring day yet!  I love my work! Sometimes I feel guilty because I enjoy it so much. Teachers, parents,  and students continually amaze and enrich me and I hope they benefit from who am I am and what I do."
